Community Schools Lead Teacher

As the Community Schools Site Lead, it is an honor and an exciting opportunity to address everyone as the community continues building around the school. Community schools use a transformative educational approach. This approach recognizes that a child's learning and development are linked to the well-being of their families and the surrounding community.

The commitment of a community school is to create an environment where every child feels safe, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential. The approach provides for academic needs, as well as the physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being of the students.

To achieve this, the school is dedicated to strengthening family and community foundations. This is done by offering integrated support services, engaging families and community members, and promoting collaborative leadership among all stakeholders. The school is working to establish a positive climate that emphasizes restorative practices, social-emotional learning, and a sense of belonging for everyone involved.

As part of this effort, the school is committed to providing:

  • Integrated support services: Including access to healthcare, mental health counseling, and other resources to address barriers to learning and well-being.
  • Expanded learning opportunities: Including before and after-school programs, weekend activities, and summer programs to provide academic support, enrichment, and real-world learning experiences.
  • Active family and community engagement: Ensuring families and community members are true partners in decision-making and have opportunities to contribute their expertise and perspectives.
  • Collaborative leadership: Fostering a culture of shared responsibility and continuous improvement among educators, administrators, families, and community partners.
  • The school recognizes the challenges faced by students and families in the community. The school is committed to using collaboration to create positive change. Together, it is possible to create a school that is a hub of support, resources, and opportunities for all, preparing students for college, career, and life.

All are encouraged to get involved and become active participants in the community school journey. All voices, ideas, and support are vital to success.

Warm regards,
Janette Salce

What is a Community School?

A community school is a public school that serves prekindergarten through grade twelve and has community partnerships that support improved academic outcomes, whole-child engagement, and family development. Community school partnership strategies include integrated support services, extended learning time, and collaborative leadership and practices for educators and administrators.

Community schools can increase equitable student learning outcomes by addressing the conditions for teaching and learning. Community schools support the needs of the whole child by strengthening family and community foundations with approaches that sustain mental and behavioral health through healing-centered practices, social-emotional learning, and restorative justice.

Community schools also ensure that students, families, and community members are embraced as full partners in every aspect of decision-making that affects the conditions for teaching and learning. Authentic power sharing and shared decision-making in all aspects of school governance is another cornerstone of community school implementation.

Community schools use this community-driven shared decision-making approach to increase access to nurses, counselors, and social workers. This creates campuses that are community hubs where students and families have easy access to the services needed to close opportunity gaps.
