Principal's Message

At La Primaria, our Lion Cubs continue to grow their “superpowers” each and every day. Over the past few months, we have focused on important character traits like kindness, courage, and perseverance—skills that help our students succeed not only in the classroom, but in life.

We have seen kindness in the way our students include others and support their classmates. We have seen courage as they try new things, ask questions, and take positive risks in their learning. And we continue to see perseverance as our Lion Cubs work hard, stay focused, and finish strong—even when learning feels challenging.

These superpowers are helping our students build confidence, strengthen relationships, and reach their goals. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child’s growth.

Together, we are helping every Lion Cub shine.

Sincerely,
Michelle Hamilton
Principal, La Primaria

Growing Stronger Together : Kindness, Courage, and Finishing Strong

At La Primaria, our Lion Cubs have been building their “superpowers” of kindness, courage, and perseverance as they grow as learners and leaders.

February – Kindness: Students decorated paw prints with acts of kindness, displayed on our “101 Paws-itiv Acts of Kindness” bulletin board (pictured below) in celebration of the 101st day of school.

March – Courage: Students created their own superheroes and wore capes during a fun recess activity, exploring what it means to be brave and take positive risks.

April – Perseverance: Our focus is on finishing strong—encouraging students to stay focused, keep trying, and do their best, even when learning is challenging.

Each day begins with a Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH) Launch, where students reflect on these traits and set a positive tone for learning. These small daily moments help build strong habits, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

We are proud of our Lion Cubs and thankful for your partnership in helping them grow stronger together!

Strengthening Literacy at La Primaria

At La Primaria, we continue to strengthen literacy so our Lion Cubs grow into confident readers. Through a systematic literacy plan and daily phonics instruction, students build fluency and comprehension while setting individual reading goals that foster motivation and pride.

Our efforts are showing strong growth on the i-Ready Diagnostic:

  • At/near grade level increased from 14% to 31% (+17 points)
  • Two or more grade levels below decreased from 34% to 23% (–11 points)

We are proud of our students’ progress and thank you for your continued partnership in supporting their reading success!

Building Strong Mathematicians at La Primaria

At La Primaria, we are continuing to strengthen math instruction so our Lion Cubs grow into confident problem solvers. Through Number Talks and Number Circles, students share their thinking and build strong number sense. We also focus on fact fluency, celebrating progress through our Number Ninja Club, where students earn water bottles and stickers as they meet goals.

Our efforts are showing strong growth on the i-Ready Math Diagnostic:

  • At/near grade level increased from 3% to 24% (+21 points)
  • Two or more grade levels below decreased from 35% to 20% (–15 points)

We are proud of our students’ progress and thank you for your continued support in helping them grow their math “superpowers”!

Preparing for Success: Building Confidence for CAASPP

At La Primaria, we believe that supporting the whole child includes helping students feel confident and prepared for important assessments. To support our students during the California CAASPP testing season, our school counselor, Mrs. Olivas, along with Counseling Intern, Ms. Cordova, provided a targeted intervention focused on managing test anxiety and strengthening test-taking skills.

Students participated in a hands-on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) craft activity in the welcoming and supportive environment of the Counselor’s Corner. This engaging experience allowed students to reflect on strategies they can use before and during testing, while also building confidence in their ability to succeed.

During the activity, students learned practical and effective strategies such as:
  • Getting enough sleep and eating a healthy breakfast
  • Carefully reading all directions
  • Starting with easier questions first
  • Taking short “brain breaks” when needed
  • Using coping skills to stay calm and focused
  • Believing in themselves
  • Looking for key words in questions
  • Managing time wisely
  • Checking their work

These lessons help equip our Lion Cubs not only for testing, but for any challenge they may face. We are proud of the way our students are preparing with confidence, positivity, and perseverance.

Together, we are helping every student feel ready to do their best!

Test Readiness: Supporting Our Lion Cubs From Home

At La Primaria, we are preparing students to feel confident and ready for spring testing. Our 3rd graders will take the CAASPP for the first time, while TK–2nd grade students will complete the i-Ready Diagnostic to measure growth.

How Families Can Help:
  • Ensure a good night’s sleep
  • Provide a healthy breakfast or eat school breakfast
  • Arrive on time
  • Encourage a positive mindset
  • Remind students to take their time and check their work

Together, we can help our Lion Cubs approach testing with confidence and perseverance. Thank you for your continued support!

Literacy Family Night: Filling Buckets with Kindness

La Primaria was filled with excitement and connection during our recent Literacy Family Night, where we had a wonderful turnout of families coming together to support student learning. This special evening was tied to our monthly focus on kindness, helping reinforce both literacy and character development.

Families had the opportunity to listen to the story Have You Filled a Bucket Today? in the language of their choice—English, Spanish, or Mandarin—so everyone could fully engage in a meaningful way.

After the read-aloud sessions, families came back together as a whole group for a hands-on activity. Each family decorated their own “bucket,” which they will continue to fill at home with acts of kindness they share with one another. To support all learners, we provided sentence frames in all three languages to help families write messages to place in their buckets, making the activity accessible and inclusive for everyone.

It was a joyful evening that brought together literacy, family engagement, and our Lion Cub values. Thank you to all of our families for your participation and partnership in helping us grow a caring and connected school community!

Family Math Night: Learning Through Play and Connection

La Primaria families came together for a fun and engaging Family Math Night, all tied to a festive St. Patrick’s Day theme! It was a wonderful evening of learning, laughter, and connection as families explored math in meaningful and interactive ways.

We began the evening together by modeling a Counting Circle, giving families a chance to experience how students build number sense, listen to one another, and practice mathematical thinking in a supportive environment.

Families then split into two groups for hands-on learning:
  • TK–1st Grade: Students and families used Lucky Charms cereal to practice sorting, counting, and graphing by organizing and recording the different marshmallow shapes.
  • 2nd–3rd Grade: Students used a deck of cards to build math equations that equal 10, strengthening their understanding of number relationships while practicing fluency in a fun, game-based way.

At the end of the evening, everyone came back together for fellowship and community time, enjoying a snack while celebrating their learning and connection with one another.

Thank you to all of our families for joining us and making math a fun, shared experience. Together, we are building confident mathematicians—one activity at a time!

Stay Connected: Join Our PAC & ELAC Meetings

We invite all families to attend our PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) and ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) meetings. These are great opportunities to receive important school updates, learn about programs and supports, and share your thoughts and ideas.

Your voice matters, and your input helps us make informed decisions that support all of our students. We hope you’ll join us and be part of the conversation as we continue to strengthen our La Primaria community!
